7 Ways To Relieve Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the absence of any external sound source. It is commonly referred to as “ringing in the ears,” although the perceived sound can take various forms, such as buzzing, hissing, whistling, or humming. Tinnitus is a symptom of an underlying condition.

The exact cause of tinnitus is not always clear, but it often occurs because of damage to the auditory system. Some common causes include prolonged exposure to loud noises, age-related hearing loss, earwax blockage, certain medications, ear infections, and certain medical conditions such as Menniere’s disease.

Tinnitus is experienced in different ways. It can be temporary or chronic, intermittent or continuous, and its severity can vary from mild to severe. For some individuals, tinnitus can be bothersome and have a significant impact on their quality of life, causing difficulties with concentration, sleep, and emotional well-being. Tinnitus can be managed in the following ways-

  1. Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT): TRT is a therapeutic approach that combines sound therapy with counseling. It aims to retrain the brain’s response to tinnitus, making it less noticeable over time. This therapy involves using low-level background noise generators and counseling sessions to help individuals habituate to tinnitus.TRT typically involves wearing a device that emits low-level, neutral sound and counseling sessions to develop coping strategies.
  2.  Tinnitus Sound Therapy: Background noise or soothing sounds can help mask or distract from the perception of tinnitus. You can use white noise machines, fans, or specific sound therapy apps that provide a variety of calming sounds like ocean waves, rain, or gentle music. The idea is to provide a soothing background sound that reduces the prominence of tinnitus.
  3. Relaxation Techniques: Engaging in relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, or progressive muscle relaxation, can help reduce stress levels and promote a sense of calm.
    • Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR): PMR is a relaxation technique that involves systematically tensing and relaxing different muscle groups to promote overall relaxation. Stress and tension can exacerbate tinnitus symptoms. Reducing stress levels is crucial for the reduction in the severity of tinnitus symptoms.
    • Deep Breathing Exercises: Deep breathing exercises help activate the body’s relaxation response. Find a quiet and comfortable place to sit or lie down, and take slow, deep breaths in through your nose, allowing your abdomen to rise. Exhale slowly through your mouth, letting your abdomen fall. Repeat this deep breathing pattern for a few minutes.
    • Meditation: Meditation typically involves focusing your attention on a specific object or mantra.
  4. Physical therapy can be helpful for some individuals with tinnitus when tinnitus is associated with muscle tension, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, or neck-related issues. Simple exercises like gentle jaw movements, neck stretches, and massage can help relieve muscle tension and potentially alleviate tinnitus symptoms. Tinnitus can sometimes be connected to muscle tension or imbalances in the neck and shoulder region. Physical therapy may involve exercises to improve posture, strengthen neck and shoulder muscles, and release tension in these areas.
  5.  Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): CBT focuses on changing the negative thought patterns and emotional responses associated with tinnitus. It can help individuals develop coping strategies, manage stress, and improve their overall well-being.
  6.  Avoiding triggers: Certain factors like caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and loud noises can worsen tinnitus for some individuals. Identifying and avoiding these triggers may help alleviate symptoms.
  7.  Identifying and Treating Underlying Conditions: If an underlying medical condition is causing tinnitus, such as earwax buildup, middle ear infections, or blood vessel disorders, treating the underlying condition may alleviate tinnitus symptoms. It could involve medical interventions, medications, or surgical procedures.
