- The prevalence of lower back pain is about 80 percent. Most of the lower back pains are acute which resolve within 6 weeks. Around 10 percent case of lower back pain is with serious pathology.
- The Conservative line of management is the first line of treatment for the majority of lower back pains which are mechanical. Surgery is required in a small number of cases resulting from infection, fractures due to osteoporosis or cancer.
- Although uncommon, some potentially serious causes of lower back pain don’t involve injury to the back. These are pneumonia, gall bladder disease, kidney infections, or a stomach ulcer.
- Degenerative changes in the spine are common with ageing and can be found in normal individuals with no lower back pain history or episode. The discs or “shock absorbers” between the vertebrae of the spine shrink with ageing.
- Poor posture, obesity, and psychological stress can aggravate back pain. Being anxious and depressed influences the perception of pain severity and being stressed increases the muscle tension in the back.
- Lower Back pain can be the result of pain in the joints of the back, pain arising from nerve irritation, the pain of discogenic origin, or muscle/soft tissue pain.
- Bed rest for lower back pain is fine for 1-2 days, but physical activity in moderation is the key to good recovery from lower back pain. Even after recovery, a good exercise program for your back is essential to prevent it from coming back.
- Muscular imbalance is the major causative factor of lower back pain of non-specific origin. So having a good balance between your core muscles and back muscles is extremely important. Core muscles act as a corset around your spine. Having a six-pack doesn’t mean you have a strong core, you need to strengthen all three abdominals, rectus abdominis, transverse abdominis, and obliques. Engage in activities promoting core muscle activation. You can start with easy to do abdominal or belly breathing.
- Improving strength, flexibility, and endurance of your back is one of the best ways to prevent the recurrence of lower back pain in the future.
- Getting enough Calcium and Vitamin D is essential for your bone health and preventing spinal fractures due to osteoporosis.
So keep calm, relax, and keep moving for a healthier back.
